End-to-end example: a day in the life of a railway contractor using Smart School.

Here is a real day in the life of a railway track maintenance contractor using Smart School's Contractor Mode.

06:00 — The day starts

Rajesh, a railway contractor, opens his dashboard. He sees two work orders scheduled for today:
- KM 245-246 Rail Inspection — 4 labourers, 08:00-16:00
- KM 247 Sleeper Replacement — 6 labourers, 06:00-14:00

He taps the second order — the sleeper replacement — to check the checklist.

06:30 — Marking attendance

The crew arrives at KM 247. Rajesh opens the shift and taps Mark Attendance. All 6 labourers are defaulted to present. He toggles one to Late — Ramesh arrived at 06:45. The rest stay present.

08:00 — Second shift starts

The rail inspection crew starts at KM 245. Rajesh marks attendance for the 4 labourers — all present.

10:30 — Updating progress

The sleeper replacement crew has finished 4 of 7 sleepers. Rajesh opens the checklist:
- Mark sleepers — Done (100%)
- Remove fastenings — Done (100%)
- Extract old sleeper — Done (100%)
- Insert new sleeper — In Progress (60%)
- Refasten — Pending
- Verify gauge — Pending
- Photograph finished work — Pending

He taps Insert new sleeper, updates to 100%, marks it Done. Takes a photo of the new sleeper — the app shows Processing… for 3 seconds, then the thumbnail appears.

14:00 — Sleeper job complete

All 7 tasks are Done. The work order auto-transitions to Done. Rajesh taps Generate Report. The text summary appears instantly. A PDF generating… indicator appears and resolves 8 seconds later to a Download PDF button.

16:00 — Rail inspection complete

Five of eight tasks are Done, two are Skipped (not applicable today), one is Pending (needs follow-up tomorrow). The work order stays In Progress.

17:00 — Publishing reports

Rajesh opens the sleeper replacement report, taps Publish, then Share via Email. He enters the railway supervisor's email and sends the PDF. The supervisor receives a 1.2 MB PDF with all 7 tasks, photos, and measurements.

18:00 — Auto-reports

Auto-generate is enabled. The system creates a report for the rail inspection order automatically. It also runs the daily storage snapshot — Rajesh can see he has used 1.8 of 2 GB on his Basic plan.

What Rajesh did NOT do

  • He never called anyone to ask which labourers showed up
  • He never typed a WhatsApp message listing what got done
  • He never opened Excel to build a report
  • He never WhatsApp'd photos to the supervisor one by one

Everything — attendance, tasks, photos, the report — went through the app.
